The Presence Of Asian Style In Interior Design

written by Agnes Ho May 26, 2020

Besides Bohemian, Scandinavian, or Minimalism, Asian-inspired style is also one of the unassuming design trends. Influenced by the majority of Chinese and Japanese culture, Oriental style showcases a touch of graceful and tranquility, which creates a comfortable as well as relaxing atmosphere.

Asian design focuses on sophisticated but straightforward materials. Using clear-lines, unique and detailed patterns, bold colors on neutral tone, and natural lights. In addition, the elements of spirit, such as feng shui, zen also were paid attention to the overall architecture.

What is the Asian style of interior design?

Also known as Oriental design, Asian style is a fusion of a variety of different cultures from all across the Asia area. It inherits the value of traditional beauty and promotes modern architectural quintessence. Asian-inspired design gears towards building a modest, serene, and harmonious environment where people can feel calming and instinctively connect with nature. Especially, Oriental design tends to add an accent with beautiful and elegant handmade accessories. Not only enhance the aesthetics but also show off the character and philosophy of the homeowner.

The characteristics of Asian interior design

Color

Inspired by Chinese and Japanese culture, the designs of Asian styles are a combination of both. While Japan prefers neutral tones for modesty and simplicity, China prefers to use bold colors to highlight the overall design. The typical backdrop in Asian houses tends to use gentle, soft colors such as white, light beige, cream, or wood color. Not only creating a sense of relaxation and tranquility but also reflects the subtle philosophy of design.

In Chinese inspired-room, red is usually selected to make an accent because it represents prosperity and luck. Just add a red rug, red lantern, or merely paint a cabinet table with red color is still enough to create a big statement. If you do not feel pleased with this option, you could give it a chance with other bright colors. For example, orange, rich purple, shamrock green,… are great alternation in order to against a neutral backdrop as well.

Material

Natural elements are also gained attention in Asian designs, from large furniture to the smallest decorations. Natural materials bring balance and seamlessness to the rest of the design and create a cultural space close to nature.

It is not difficult to come across images of decorative items made of bamboo, rattan, rice paper, wood, or stone statues which were very skillfully sculpted in Asian- inspired rooms. More than just expressing the simple and rustic beauty but also offer a touch of delicate and attractive.

Silk fabric for curtains, pillowcases,… not only existed in the old aristocracy but now it is still very popular because of its elegance and nobility which demonstrate the house’s gorgeous class.

Lighting

Lighting can be considered as a key to the success of any design style. To create a perfect connection with nature, Asian architecture tends to bring as much natural light into the living space as possible through open designs. For example, adopt glass or translucent windows, skylights, or use sun-blind made from bamboo or wooden blind.

Besides, artificial light is also an indispensable part to create a harmonious and comfortable atmosphere. The warm lighting offers a warm and cozy feeling, suitable for living room, bedroom, hallway, etc. Meanwhile, cool lighting gives a sense of modern and cleanliness, help to remain awake as well as easily concentrate on the task. As a result, it is best for kitchen, workroom, make-up room,…

Furniture & Accessories

Another feature of Asian design is the use of simple yet sophisticated furniture. Characterized by clear lines, elegant colors, and simple designs. However, that’s is no reason for boringness and monotony. By contrast, it is very attractive and impressive thanks to sophisticated small details, unique patterns, or even rustic paints on the surface. The theme of additional decorative elements usually revolves around the spiritual values and cultural life of Asians metaphorically through images of mythological beasts. For example, porcelain vases, porcelain bowls, or plates painted with dragon patterns to show nobility in Chinoiserie.

In addition, the furniture is also scientifically arranged to create an open and neat living environment. All arrangements move toward the function of the designs.

Balance

Feng Shui and Zen play an important role in almost every Oriental design which is expressed through the selection and placement of things in interior design. Also, Asians tend to add natural elements into their living space to achieve the balance between humans and nature. To give a clear instance, a water feature in the entrance or backyard supposed that brings positive energy, and prosperity according to the homeowner. While orchid represents fertility, luxury, beauty, wealth, and luck. The last purpose is to bring good and lucky things to their life.
